Your wedding is such a special day and nothing enhances the ceremony and reception like live music.
It adds that magical quality which will help to make the day so memorable for you, your family and friends.

What type of music do you want?

There is much truth in the old adage “ All round the world – he who pays the piper, calls the tune.” This is particularly true when it comes to a special event such as your wedding. It’s your wedding and you should have the music that you want. As a professional musician for over 30 years, with extensive experience in wedding music both in Australia and the UK, I know the importance of discussing the style of music beforehand.

Music for the ceremony

Quite often couples have a piece of music that means so much to them, and having this played during the ceremony can add to the occasion. This could be a classical or popular, romantic, instrumental piece or perhaps a well-known operatic aria. You choose. Musical tastes vary and are all very individual.

Music for the reception

Usually at a wedding, the guests comprise a wide range of ages, from children to elderly relatives and friends. An experienced musician is able to please a broad range of age groups, ensuring that there is something for everyone throughout the evening. Gentle music can provide a pleasing backdrop for drinks and/or the meal with pauses for speeches. Speeches can also be enhanced with tasteful musical inserts.

Remember, guests may not have seen each other for some time and they like to converse and “catch up.” They should not have to struggle with the music to make themselves heard. Song selection and particularly volume variations, throughout the evening are so important. The volume can be lifted, later, for dancing and here also special requests can be incorporated into the programme.

Musically, there are various possibilities from solo piano/vocal, solo musician/instrumental, Latin, pop/rock, country or even swing bands. Often couples prefer a solo musician for the earlier part of the reception, saving the band for the dancing later.

Looking good

The appearance of the musicians is also important. They need to be well dressed and smart to ensure that they reflect the tone and style of your big day.

Time and space

Having decided on your music, where will they play? Remember that musicians will need space to set up and usually require electricity nearby and some lighting. If a band or musician is playing during a meal, careful positioning is important. I always like to look at the venue and discuss the layout with the bride and groom to ensure the best possible effect on the day. Set-up time and access prior to the ceremony or reception should be discussed too. After all you just want to arrive and enjoy the whole experience.

Get it in writing

I always like to confirm the details in writing for each individual wedding so that nothing is overlooked. Such details should include: arrival times, set up times, programme order, special requests/songs, costs/payment details and dress style.
