Framed
By Paul Dion

Twenty three year old Brendan Wall has taken up the reins of the family business “Mountain Image Picture Framing” in Berridale and has found himself very busy indeed.

I thought I’d drop in and find out why.

Brendan Wall cuts the right angle.

Armed with a favourite Albert Namatjira print I asked Brendan about what makes a successful frame.

“It’s all about colour” he explained and proceeded to align a number of samples with the Namatjira.

“The colours in the painting need to be drawn out by the colours in the frame and surrounding mat board” he said.

He went on to explain that the style and size of the frame also played a part and must reflect the mood of the painting.

For example a rustic frame for a rustic painting or perhaps a fine delicate frame for a delicate watercolour.

All paintings suggest a frame style although it’s best to experiment because sometimes the least obvious combination can produce the best result.

The background wall colour and size is another major factor too.

It all comes down to personal taste in the end and most people have a good idea of what style they’d like but even so he always likes to push a few boundaries just in case that extra special surprise frame presents itself.

“To glass or not to glass?” I asked.

“Once again it’s all about personal taste and also whether to use normal or non-reflective glass. Each job is unique and needs to be assessed on its merits.”

The issue of protecting a work from unwanted marking or damage is another consideration.

Mountain Image Picture Framing also produces display frames for sporting items such as signed rugby jerseys and they definitely need to be kept safe from inquisitive fingers.

A week later I collected my Albert Namatjira print beautifully framed with a fine deep wood frame and an olive toned mat board surround to bring out the bluey greens of the Australian landscape.

    Congratulations Brendan.

    Job well done.
